In the summer of 2002 a fire that came to be known as Biscuit burned nearly half a million acres, centered on the Kalmiopsis wilderness and stretching into California. It also set off already smoldering political conflicts over natural resource management and land use. Amongst trunks even as stark as these you will find the fire adapted landscape alive, from mallee understory resprouting from its blackened stump to the germinating Pinus attenuata that requires the heat to release its seed.
