There are 6 endemic genera and over 100 species of Hawaiian "lobeliads", a term describing the mostly tropical, trunk forming group related to the garden lobelia. It was a precious moment seeing these as they have been until recently extinct in the wild and these few plants represent a reintroduced to what was originally the Shipman property for which the species is named at Hakalau Reserve.
