A highly polymorphic species endemic to all the main islands, plants on Nihoa have reddish flowers and green, mostly hairless leaflets while plants from Necker have salmon orange flowers and silver, indumentum covered foliage. There are upright "tree" forms and low prostrate shrublets in other areas. This is the Moloka'i arborescent form photographed at the Amy B. H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden.
